Since its 1987 arcade release, the R-Type series has been a mainstay of the shoot 'em up genre and one of Irem's best-selling titles. Fans have enjoyed the high difficulty, skillful piloting, monstrous boss battles, and driving music throughout all the sequels and ports. The standout ports were the original Game Boy versions of R-Type and R-Type II, released in 1991 and 1992, respectively. Irem then released R-Type DX in 1999, showing a whole new color version of both games. Then, in 2026, Irem and City Connection released R-TYPE DX: Music Encore. Producer Nobuhiro Yoshikawa and composer Tetsuro Sato (WASi303) were tasked with creating all-new music tracks for the stages that had previously reused the same music from their original release. Now you can own both the original soundtrack and the new soundtrack for one of gaming's most intense portable shoot 'em ups!
